In addition to our Global Partnerships Work and the invaluable efforts of the International Pupil Council, Stepney pupils and staff are committed to saving our planet. We are embracing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In our different phases, staff and pupils are working on different goals over the last few years.

Global Goals for Sustainable Development

Early Years Foundation Stage


EYFS are going to:

  • Designate a light monitor to turn off lights when classroom is empty SDG 12;

  • Litter picking in our outside area, linked to clean environments eg in :WGOABH the areas are litter free SDG 15;

  • Begin to discuss veg patch, fave foods, people that are less fortunate. Foods we can grow. How we can use what we grow. Compost the waste;

  • Highlight the need for less food packaging eg on school fruit Continue SDG 2;

Years 1 & 2


Year 1 & 2 are going to:

  • be studying Africa as their thematic unit this term so will consider SDG 1 No Poverty and will also look at SDG 15 LIfe on Land;

  • As part of their exhibition they will make African animal models from recycled materials;

  • They will look at Newsround and pick out global issues;

Years 3 & 4


Year 3 & 4 are going to:

  • look at SDG 2 Zero Hunger in their science work;

  • consider SDG 15 Life on Land as part of their work on National Parks;

  • study SDG 14 issues as part of their focus on coastal areas;


Years 5 & 6


Year 5 & 6 are going to:

  • be studying Ancient Greeks and, as part of this, will consider the development of Democracy SDG 16 and Gender Equality SDG 5;

  • In the summer term last year, they did a unit on Fair Trade and will look to plan a similar one for this year;

PE Team


The PE coaches are going to:

  • use the pupils’ personal challenges for press ups/sit ups so they may compete with pupils in Adeline SDG 3;

  • send over some pedometers to Adeline so their pupils and ours may compete on the number of steps walked SDG 3;

Our Stepney School Pledge

"At Stepney, we aim to reduce our paper usage, encourage reusing paper and reduce the amount we have to recycle."

Year 4 have been working hard during the autumn term 2018 and have discovered some poignant and frightening facts about the state of our polluted oceans. 

Mrs Warcup has taken our school pledge on board, making flags from reusing plastic bottle tops mounted on the boxes that our fruit is delivered in.  She has started with the Sierra Leonian flag as part of our global work and is currently working on the Union Flag.

The Stepney - Adeline Environmental Award

Our International Pupil Councillors requested a special weekly award to be given to the class who have done the most towards saving the environment each week, whether it is: reducing their carbon footprint; not wasting paper; reusing paper; reducing the single-use plastic they have or other worthy activities.

The Stepney - International School Award

Stepney Primary School in Hull has been awarded the Intermediate level of the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.

The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life work in today’s world.


Stepney Primary School’s international work includes global projects with partner schools in Freetown, Sierra Leone since 2010. Recently these have included teachers from Stepney helping to set up reading initiatives in Adeline School in Sierra Leone and pupils in both schools undertaking work on reducing single use plastic. Over the last nine years, pupils have been participating in the International Pupil Council that was co-founded by the head of Stepney Primary in Hull and the head of Conforti School in Freetown.


On hearing the news that Stepney Primary School had achieved the intermediate level of the award, head teacher Paul Browning said: “We are delighted to receive this reward, which recognises the passion of our pupils and staff towards global work. Stepney is a multicultural school in a multicultural world and we are all dedicated towards building bridges, breaking through barriers and widening our horizons.”


John Rolfe MBE, Schools Outreach Manager at the British Council, said: ‘Stepney Primary School’s international work has earned the school well-deserved recognition in the form of the British Council International School Award - Intermediate Certificate.

The British Council International School Award celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and we are very proud of the great international work it has supported and shared.

Many thanks to everyone at the school, for all their commitment to developing international work and sharing great classroom practice and resources. This is enriching education for its pupils; and their excellent collaborative projects with partner schools overseas are bringing the world into their classrooms. This is key support for the development of skills young people increasingly need to be the globally aware citizens of the future.

The award is now available worldwide in countries such as India, Greece, Egypt, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Around 6,000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.


The International School Award encourages and supports schools to develop:

  • An international ethos embedded throughout the school

  • A whole school approach to international work

  • Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools

  • Year-round international activity

  • Involvement of the wider community
