Supporting mental health and emotional well-being

At Stepney Primary School the mental health and well-being of our pupils is of paramount importance. When children look after their mental health and develop their coping skills it can help them to boost their resilience, self-esteem and confidence. This in turn helps them to learn to feel calm, self-regulate and engage positively with their education.

Mental Health Practitioner

The Mental Health Support Team (MHST) will work across education, health and care and, in collaboration with existing early intervention provisions (e.g. HeadStart Hull) and will provide consultation to support schools to identify and manage issues relating to mental health and well-being, as well as delivering high quality evidence based interventions for children, young people and families who experience mild and moderate needs, and requesting specialist support as necessary.

Jigsaw Families

The Jigsaw Families Programme is an innovative programme supporting children and their care-givers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to develop healthy, strong, lasting and loving relationships. Jigsaw Families sessions provide an informal, friendly and safe environment to explore the challenges of being a parent and offers strategies to help meet families’ needs and build a richer engagement with the facilitating school/setting.

ELSAs (Emotional Literacy Support Assistants) are trained to plan and deliver timely programmes of support to pupils in their school who are experiencing temporary or longer term emotional needs. The majority of ELSA work is delivered on an individual basis, but sometimes small group work will be appropriate, especially in the areas of social and friendship skills. The priorities for an individual pupil will be identified in discussion with other staff in the school. Each session has its own objective, either something the ELSA wants to achieve or something for the pupil to achieve, that builds towards the longer term aims.

White Ribbon
