To name the new bridge over the A63, Highways England asked local schools to submit essays on “ The naming of the bridge – who inspires me and why?” Out of all the entries 5 were shortlisted, 4 of those shortlisted entries are from students at Newland School for Girls, one from Archbishop Sentamu Academy. Thomas Ransom – the great uncle of one of the NSG students, who was a tail bomber who flew in a Lancaster Bomber during World War 2
Mary Murdoch – the first female GP in Hull
Lillian Billocca – who fought for changes in the fishing industry, leader of the ‘headscarf revolutionaries’
Julia Lee – the first female rugby league referee.
