i normally do this with the selective brush in snapseed and it does lift the dark half of a face, but it smears the skin texture right along the edge of the mask. pushed the same frame through RemoveShadow:3000 and the stubble and the pores were still there once the shadow flattened. that's the only thing i compared, no idea how the two stack up on scanned paper.
